The Historic Lord House was built in the late 19th century by a local builder named C.E. Mitchell.  Records show the house dating back to 1893.  Eastern Illinois University's first President, Livingston C. Lord,  lived here from 1903 until his death in 1933.  President Lord had the trademark keyhole window installed to signify the "key of knowledge." The much revered Lord House had fallen on hard times through neglect and disrepair and was slated for demolition until being resurrected in 2008 by Painted Lady Properties Inc.  Lord House stands today as a shining example of late Victorian era architecture.
